TEXT
March, 1885: Tensions between Louis Riel's provisional government at Batoche and the
Canadian government have finally reached a breaking point. After receiving orders from the
insane Metis leader and his 'Exovedate' (local council) that they surrender at once, the Mounties
of Fort Carlton under Superintendant Garnet Crozier have decided to face the rabble rousers at a
tiny hamlet named Duck Lake. A bloody skirmish ensues - resulting in the first casualties of the
Northwest Rebellion.

After a fierce three-day shootout, the Metis capital finally capitulates to the forces of the
Dominion on the 15th day of the month, marking the end of organized Metis resistance in
Canada. Some of the survivors move onto reservations in Saskatchewan and Assiniboia, while
others choose to flee south to the States. Riel, along with several of his followers, surrenders to
two Canadian scouts in the woods to the northeast of Batoche. After a short trial in Regina, the
mad Metis is hung - an action which would have serious political repercussions for both Prime
Minister Macdonald and the Conservative Party in the years to come.

How HUMILIATING!! Regina, the 'Queen City' of the Canadian West, has fallen to an
uncouth, disorganized and untrained band of rebels. Where were the Mounties at the time -
eating donuts?!? This is a serious setback for the young Dominion. It could mean anything from
the total balkanization of the country to annexation by the United States. The rebels now gain the
ability to industrialize on a small scale, establishing them firmly in the family of American nations.

For the majority of the young recruits under Major General Middleton, the Battle of Fish Creek
is their first real combat experience. This fact alone enables Dumont's sharpshooters to hold
their positions on the bluffs for several days. It is a lack of ammo, as opposed to a lack of
fighting spirit, that forces the Metis to finally withdraw to the trenches of Batoche. The Exovedate
panics and disbands as the approaching Canadians deliver an ultimatum to the seemingly doomed
Riel.
