Paraguay War Readme
====================

Salve!
Welcome to my Readme file. First I would like to thank you for downloading this scenario, cause
its the first I have made so far. Second I would like to thank the people who made all the stuff
I used to make it, like icons, units, etc.

Well, what more I have to say? Yes, feel free to modify this scenario the way you please, just
dont forget to include my name in your modification.

Historical Note 1864-1870
---------------

The Paraguay War, or War of the Triple Alliance, was the more bloodiest and long war South America
has ever seen. It was after this conflit that the power in the continent set its ways until today.
The Brazilian government didnt wish Argentina to restablish Uruguay to the old Vice-Kingdom of Prata,
because it could damage the Imperial interests in that region, like loosing the fluvial link with
the province of Mato Grosso. So, Brazil sent troops and warships to make sure the Uruguayan
government lay faithful to the Brazilian Empire.
Paraguay accurately assessed the September 1864 Brazilian intervention in Uruguay as a slight to
the region's lesser powers. But Solano Lopez, Paraguayan Dictator, concluded incorrectly that
preserving Uruguayan "independence" was crucial to Paraguay's future as a nation. Consistent with
his plans to start a Paraguayan "third force" between Argentina and Brazil, Solano Lpez committed
the nation to Uruguay's aid. When Argentina failed to react to Brazil's invasion of Uruguay,
Solano Lpez seized a Brazilian warship in November 1864. He quickly followed this move with an
invasion of Mato Grosso, Brazil, in March 1865. Solano Lpez then decided to strike at his enemy's
main force in Uruguay. But Solano Lpez was unaware that Argentina had acquiesced to Brazil's
Uruguay policy and would not support Paraguay against Brazil. When Solano Lpez requested permission
for his army to cross Argentine territory to attack the Brazilian province of Ro Grande do Sul,
Argentina refused. Undeterred, Solano Lpez sent his forces into Argentina, probably expecting local
strongmen to rebel and remove Argentina from the picture. Instead, the action set the stage for the
May 1865 signing by Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay (now reduced to puppet status) of the Treaty of
the Triple Alliance. Under the treaty, these nations vowed to destroy Solano Lpez's government.

The Paraguay War endured five years and four months: from November 12th of 1864, to March 1st
of 1870.

In the first part of the war, Paraguay achieved many victories, conquering parts of Argentina and
Brazil. However, the Paraguayan navy suffered a massive strike by the Brazilian Imperial Armada
in the battle of Riachuelo at the same time as the Allied forces expulsed them from Uruguaiana.
Then with the Armada provinding support, Allied troops were able to defeat the Paraguayans in
their own fortresses, like Tuiuti and Curupaiti.

Leaders
-------

In my scenario you will see many personalities, whose participation in the war was crucious.

-Francisco Solano Lopez: Paraguayan dictator.

-Dom Pedro II and Dona Teresa: both Emperor and Empress of Brazil in the 19th century.

-General Mitre (Bartolom Mitre): president of Argentina.

-Dona Isabel and dEu Count: both the claimer princess of the throne and her husband.

-Caxias Duke (Lus ALves de Lima e Silva): supreme commander os the Brazilian army.

-Admiral Tamandar (Joaquim Marques Lisboa): supreme commander of the mighty Brazilian Navy.

Army and Navy
-------------

During the government of Lopez, Paraguay was one of the most powerful nations of the continent.
The Paraguayan army had 65.000 soldiers, equiped with modern armament. The Allied forces, together,
had just 30.000 thousand soldiers. However, Brazils "Imperial Armada", was the largest navy in
Latin America.
In spite of its great infantry, Paraguay almost didnt have cavalry, because all the horses
available in the market were bought by the Brazilian Empire, in a most clever moviment.

Mau Baron
----------

You will also note in my scenario things like "Mau Bank" or "Mau Enterprise". These things are
wonders I have modified. Irineu Evangelista de Sousa, Mau Baron, was the first industrial and
banker of Brazil, and he was responsible for the creation of both the first Brazilian railway and
the first Brazilian factory. He also made a transport company in Rio de Janeiro, a gas company,
a navigation company in Amazonas River, and a bank wich had fifials in most of the latin America
countries, and even one in England.

Cities and Transports
---------------------

By the end of the 19th Century (and until today), Brazil was the most powerful country in the
region. However, it had a lack of a good transportation system, because the population was most
concentrated in the coast. There were just three roads: one between Rio de Janeiro and So Paulo,
another between So Paulo and Santos, and other between Curitiba and Paranagu. Rio de Janeiro
was the principal city of the continent, with a great population and industrial power.
Paraguay was the only country wich had a good road system. It also had one railway, the first
of South America.
