On Thursday, 1 April, 4:30 p.m., the Foreign Office belatedly sent a signal to the governor of the
Falklands, Rex Hunt, telling him that an Argentine invasion force was sailing for the islands. The
Governor expected a threat similar to the scrap merchants that had landed on South Georgia, and
thought that this could be countered by the meagre force of Royal Marines on the Falklands.
When information came through of the true scale of the Argentine force, there was only sixteen
hours to prepare 60 soldiers to fight 15,000 invaders. The Argentines only lost three men before
forcing Rex Hunt to surrender the capital.
