                             Civilization II

Lunar Mission Patch, Rules, Updates & New Units

				Release 1.1
                            Dated: 3 October 2000

For Civilization II - version 1.08 thru 2.62
                            Author: JOHN VALDEZ

with special thanks to Frederic Meunie author of
                          Moonland Modpack ver. 3.0

                    -----------+DISCLAIMERS+------------

I make no promises toward the validity of this modpack. Use
of the modpack and any files, utilities, or information within
is done at the user's own risk.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

                         HOW TO INSTALL:

This modpack has been tested with Matt MacLeoad's Mod pack manager,
and works perfectly. I highly recommend the modpack manager when
using any modpacks with CIVILIZATION II.

**If you are using the modpack manager, then be sure to put all
the files (even the *.wav files) in the same folder/directory that the modpack
manager creates or you will not have the sounds that go with the patch.

GENERAL INFO:

After unzipping, you should have the following 18 main files: rules.txt, labels.txt,
pedia.txt, game.txt, units.gif, terrain2.gif, terrain1.gif, (various .wav files not
counted), advice.txt, tutorial.txt, menu.txt, people.gif, cities.gif, city.txt,
city.gif, icons.gif Lunar.bat and ReadThis.txt.

This patch contains replacement files for 57 pre-existing files in your
Civ II directory. Most of these files are sound files that will need to be
copied into your sound directory only if you are NOT USING THE MODPACK
MANAGER. Seven additional custom sound files have been included, in case you
want to create or manipulate your own sounds.

You should have a total of 59 files when you unzip.

**IMPORTANT: Make sure you back up the files before you
install this patch into your Civ II directory if you would like to go back
to the original setup (of course, you'll have these same files on your Civ2
CD-ROM anyway!). This patch is NOT supported by MicroProse, but
has been play-tested, and will run without error.

----------------------------INSTALLATION---------------------------

You may feel free to use the batch file I created or you can follow these
steps if the batch file doesn't work:

STEP 1: The simplest way to install this patch is to create a folder/
directory called C:\LUNAR.

STEP 2: Then, create another folder under C:\LUNAR called: CIV2.

STEP 3: Then, create another folder under C:\LUNAR\CIV2 called: SOUND

STEP 4: Now, copy all your civ files from your ORIGINAL CIV2 directory
files to C:\LUNAR\CIV2.

STEP 5: Now, copy all your c:\civ\sound files to C:\LUNAR\CIV2\SOUND.

STEP 6: Now, unzip all the LUNAR civ files to C:\LUNAR\CIV2.

STEP 7: Now, move all the unzipped LUNAR sound files (*.wav) to
C:\LUNAR\CIV2\SOUND.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, I know it is a lot of steps, but now you don't have to take the
time to BACK UP the old civ and you can even run the program from Win '95/98
desktop if you just create a shortcut. You can run the LUNAR MISSION
independently of your old civ and if you don't like it, you can just delete
it and you still have your original civ intact!

WARNING:
Due to many Technologies, and a few units being "swapped around" in release
1.x of this patch, it is NOT recomended you use this patch on any saved
games, unless you want some weird things to happen... (ie: if you are loading
a saved game using Any Patch, scenario or any unmoded version of
Civ 2, you're not recomended using this patch on that save file). Either
wait till you've finished your current saved game, or dump it and start this
patch and a new game right away!

WHAT IS THE LUNAR MISSION PATCH?

The Lunar Mission Patch is a test of "What if we colonized the Moon?".
Nations compete to build and dominate the Lunar surface. Dissident humans break
off from these bases and form their own base calling themselves the "Lunarites".
The goal is to unite the Moon through conquest or build a spaceship and let them
have that pulverized chunk o' rock!

Inspired by Frederic Meunie's Moonland Modpack, this patch explores the moon as the next
and most challenging civ game yet. Technologies have been revised and changed from
Moonland---as well as: units, terrain, govts., graphics, resources, etc. to reflect the new
and innovated approach to colonizing the moon! If you liked or are familiar with Moonland
v.3.0, this patch will capture you right from the start!

WHAT'S NEW IN THIS RELEASE?

Well, this is a completely new kind of Lunar experience so hold on for
the ride of your life. It utilizes new sounds and music and a lot of
different units. For those of you who are familiar with Moonland everything
is a bit different from Frederic Meunie's patch so be careful about using
saved games from any Moonland modpack. By the way, govts., still respond
the same as in the old civ, but have different names-- in later releases,
I may make modifications to the govts. I have also made significant
graphics changes, Many graphics may not have my name on it because I
have simply modified another person's work.

IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING:

This has been playtested with v2.42 rules with units implemented, and plays
well. This patch will probably run with other versions but not FW. I may
release a new version of the Lunar Mission Patch, so feel free to contact
me if you think it's time! Also, there is a an FW scenario
UPGRADE available at www.civfanatics.com just go to the websit to download
and while you're at check out some of the other great modpacks that other
authors have made!

Of course all concievable actions can't possibly be covered, so if for
some reason you find a glitch, let me know and I'll attempt to fix it! Also,
if any ideas or comments on this patch come to mind, let me know, my E-mail
address is at the end of this text file. Not all aspects of the game
mechanics could be changed without completely reworking the game code. Some
suggestions you may have may not be possible to implement.

IMPORTANT:

You MUST have AT LEAST version 1.08 of Civ II for this patch to run properly.
Versions later than 1.08 of Civ II will all run without error. If you do not
know what version of Civ II you are running, select the "GAME" column from
the pull down menu and select "Game Options" (or "CTRL O"). This will list
your version of Civ II. If you need to update your version of Civ II, go to
the MicroProse website at http://www.microprose.com or on CompuServe go to
the Game Publishers Forum, keyword "Go Gambpub." Be sure that you take the time
to download the current version of Civ II, so this patch will run correctly.

Do Not use this patch on any saved games, especially from other patches.
In this LUNAR MISSION Patch... units are swapped around, and might do strange things to your STTOS saved games, so I make no guarantees for the other way around! As far as I know, this is the not the only LUNAR MISSION Patch but the only version of it but not the only Moon-like patch available. If you have some other version at this time, I'm not the AUTHOR! Just start a new game, or wait to install this patch!

CREDITS:

Special thanks to Frederic Meunie whose Moonland modpack served as
the start from which this modpack was created. It was Meunie's concept,
which for me, served as the start for which many ideas and modifications
spawned. I want to be sure to let you know that many of the terrains and
units probably would not have been possible, including the cities and
other graphics had it not been for the contributions of Frederic Meunie.

Special thanks to Andrew Coates and Chris Eyre for their city screen graphic.

The only credit I take for this work is by putting together and innovating
a modpack already designed by Frederic Meunie. The point is that I did not
start from scratch, but at the same time, I did significant work redesigning
many aspects of the modpack; the modpack now plays with some different graphics,
units, rules.txt, terrain changes, and instead of just the moon environment
it's a matter of survival! Graphics were replaced and enhanced, along with
sounds, techs, units, icons, and playability.

Special thanks to Steven Strayer for his ReadThis.txt format.

Cities from OUTPOST (Sierra already formatted for use, from Moonland v.3.0.

Special thanks goes to Kevin Gilbert for his scanner graphic.

Special thanks again to Frederic Meunie for making some of the terrain
graphics available on the web!

Some resource graphics, and icons are taken from the Mars Scenario,
Civ2: Fantastic Worlds, Microprose.

I would also like to acknowledge the many artists whose work that
went into graphics that I do not know the names of. I have made every
effort to include everyone, but in the course of making this patch,
it is possible that I have missed someone. So, if by chance you see
anything that even resembles the work of others, please, please email
me so that I may include their name for the proper credit!
