                    -----------+DISCLAIMERS+------------

I make no promises toward the validity of this mod pack. Use
of the mod pack and any files, utilities, or information within
is done at the user's own risk.

*************************HOW TO INSTALL******************************

	   ***INSTALLATION FOR MODPACK MANAGER ONLY***

This modpack has been tested with Matt MacLeoad's Mod pack manager,
and works perfectly. I highly recommend the modpack manager when
using any modpacks with CIVILIZATION II. Simply create a directory
under Civ2 Modpack Manager called CIV1 and unzip the files directly
to the CIV1 folder/directory. (Note: In this particular version you
must change the files in the Civ1-dll.zip file that have the .pic
extension to .dll and place them in the civ2 directory of the modpack
manager to see the opening intro graphics. For example:

                change intro.pic to "intro.dll"
                change tiles.pic to "tiles.dll"

place both of these files in the directory called: c:\c2mm\civ2

---------------------------------------------------------------------

                  ***REGULAR INSTALLATION***

1.	UNZIP the CIV1.ZIP file and other zip files for sound
(using winzip) to a directory called "UNZIPPED".

2. GO TO MS-DOS PROMPT FOR WINDOWS 3.x, WIN 95,98 (you may need to
	restart in MS-DOS mode)

3.	TYPE: cd\unzipped

4.	At the C:\UNZIPPED> prompt TYPE: CIV1 [harddrive letter:] for
        installation to begin.

For example, if your hard drive is C:, then type:
			    CIV1 C:

**Note: You must have your Civ2 main files installed under the
default folder/directory called "MPS\CIV2" ON THE HARD DRIVE YOU
YOU SPECIFY for the installation, otherwise it will fail. If you
have other files in the unzipped directory you would like to keep,
move them to ANOTHER directory or this program may delete them!

3.	Follow the onscreen instructions for the install program and you
should be fine. Feel free to email me if there are any bugs but
it has been tested several times on various machines already
	without fail.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      ***OTHER WAYS TO INSTALL:***

1. I have done everything this guy says, but I still can't get
	the *^&%$@! modpack going!

2.	If your handy with windows then you can try this:

STEP 1: The simplest way to install this patch is to create a folder/
directory called C:\CIV1.

STEP 2: Then, create another folder under C:\CIV1 called: CIV2.

STEP 3: Then, create another folder under C:\CIV1\CIV2 called: SOUND

STEP 4: Now, copy all your civ files from your ORIGINAL CIV2 directory
files to C:\CIV1\CIV2.

STEP 5: Now, copy all your civ\sound files to C:\CIV1\CIV2\SOUND.

STEP 6: Now, copy all the unzipped CIV1 civ files to C:\CIV1\CIV2.

STEP 7: Now, copy all the unzipped CIV1 sound files to
        C:\CIV1\CIV2\SOUND.

STEP 8: Now, move intro.dll to c:\civ1\civ2\sound
	     move tiles.dll to c:\civ1\civ2\sound
             rename "intro.pic" to intro.dll
             rename "tiles.pic" to tiles.dll
FINISHED
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

                       ***DOS INSTALL***

***In case nothing happened, and it didn't work, and you are saying,
"What is he talking about?" Go to step 3.

3.	If you are not handy with windows and prefer to use dos...

Hopefully, your hard drive is C, then you could just use these dos
commands at the C> prompt for the steps above if you can't do it in
Windows for whatever reason:

Step 1. md CIV1
Step 2. cd CIV1
Step 2. md CIV2
Step 3. cd CIV2
Step 3. md SOUND
Step 4. copy c:\mps\civ2\*.* c:\CIV1\civ2
Step 5. copy c:\mps\civ2\sound\*.* c:\CIV1\civ2\sound
Step 6 move c:\unzipped\*.wav c:\CIV1\civ2\sound
Step 7. move c:\unzipped\*.* c:\CIV1\civ2
Step 8. move intro.dll c:\civ1\civ2\sound
Step 9. move tiles.dll to c:\civ1\civ2\sound
Step 10. rename intro.pic intro.dll
Step 11. rename tiles.pic tiles.dll
=====================================================================================

GENERAL INFO:

After unzipping, you should have the following main files: rules.txt, labels.txt,
game.txt, pedia.txt, units.gif, terrain2.gif, terrain1.gif, menuloop.wav, people.gif,
cities.gif, city.txt, city.gif, icons.gif, intro.pic, tiles.pic and ReadThis.txt.

This patch contains replacement files for 11 pre-existing files in your
Civ II directory.

You should have a total of 15 files when you unzip.

**IMPORTANT: Make sure you back up the files before you
install this patch into your Civ II directory if you would like to go back
to the original setup (of course, you'll have these same files on your Civ2
CD-ROM anyway!). This patch is NOT supported by MicroProse, but
has been play-tested, and will run without error.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, I know it is a lot of steps, but now you don't have to take the
time to back up the old civ and you can even run the program from Win '95/98
desktop if you just create a shortcut. You can run the CIV1 PATCH
independently of your old civ and if you don't like it, you can just delete
it and you still have your original civ intact!

WARNING:
Due to many Technologies, and a few units being "swapped around" in release
1.x of this patch, it is NOT recomended you use this patch on any saved
games, unless you want some weird things to happen... (ie: if you are loading
a saved game using Any Patch, scenario or any unmoded version of
Civ 2, you're not recomended using this patch on that save file). Either
wait till you've finished your current saved game, or dump it and start this
patch and a new game right away!

WHAT IS THE CIV1 PATCH?

Basically if you have played the CLASSIC CIVILIZATION I then you should be feeling rather
nostaligic at the moment. Every effort has been made to recreate the original game that
started it all, right down to the very feel of the environment. Even those cheesy little
unit graphics have been included (oops!, sorry TTG!). Actually this modpack is a Civ2
version of what an upgraded CIV 1 might have looked like, so you can expect to see a few
new things, but mostly there are a lot of those wonderful rules and graphics from the old
civ game.

Now that you have downloaded this patch, I wanted to take a moment to share with you the
hell that I went through to make this patch possible. Actually, it's just to give you an
idea what this patch is about and what the point of this mod is in first place.
It is always good to know where the author is coming from and whether you're a player or
a modpack writer, your going to love the challenges set forth in this testimony.

First, there were significant difference in the way both games presented the graphics that
had to be worked out. The Civ 1 screen used an X,Y-two dimensional grid and Civ 2 used a
an isometric grid. Although it sounds technical, to the regular civ player, it just means
that the graphics were drawn to look different in both games. Civ 1 showed the terrain from
bird's eye view looking directly downward. Civ 2 showed the terrain from a high point
looking across toward the horizon. As you would expect, the screen captures did not transfer
directly or compatibly to the Civ 2 format. In some cases, graphics simply had to be made
from scratch because there were no equivalents or alternatives.

This is why the terrain appears similar but not exactly like Civ 1. In my opinion, I believe
you will be quite pleased and probably won't notice all that much unless you are running
both games at the same time (which is possible if you turn off the sound on Civ 1) and making
comparisons.

Secondly, certain colors used in Civ 1 didn't...hm...how can say it..."show up" in Civ 2 when
they were transferred to the Civ 2 screen. Specifically, yellow and light blue simply came
out as white, which meant there was a lot of drawing and fixing to be done. In addition,
terrains were rotated sideways to one corner like a diamond and "squished" into the shape of
that would fit the "terrain.gif" file. Certain distortions were worked out except for the
mountains which gave me nothing but grief ( I may redraw them in future versions but no
promises!).

**Here is an interesting note: I found that when screen captured, the Civ 1 icons were exactly
the same size as Civ 2 icons and fit perfectly (aside from the color problems). This has set
in motion ideas for capturing and creating the "COLONIZATION" modpack, the so-called sequel
to Civ 1 to be completed some time in 2001.

In the midst of all this, Win '95 freaked out on me and hasn't allowed me to screen capture
another thing out of the Civ 1 game. Luckily, I had captured the intro slides and I was able
to convert them to the intro for Civ 2 using a program called GifXtractor Beta 3 version
by Rune Berge 1999, given to me by Robert Kausch. Thus, the INTRO.DLL and TILES.DLL have been
modified to create the Civ 1 environment. It is a great program, but I recommend it to experienced
modpack and scenario writers only.

Moreover, the city screen was one of my greatest feats. I was able to put together a screen
from scratch using only the background of the Civ 1 screen as a guide to get a comparable
looking screen. I had created a beautiful screen or so I thought until I deleted it. The
screen you have now is actually a better recreation the first one! So, don't tell me that
it is not perfect because I am not making a third one even in future versions.

Finally, now you know the trials and tribulations of a modpack author. I don't know if
story tickled your fancy, it sure did for me, but it is meant to let aspiring authors
know that anything is possible. --jv
*****************************************************************************************

**NOTE: This patch is NOT compatible with the old Civ 1 in any way! That means, you
won't be able to use any of those game save files you stored on delapidated 5-1/4 inch
floppy disks left in your attic or basement just in the off chance you found your original
Civ 1 disks and you still had a computer that would read them! Nor will you be able to
use any of the Civ 1 tools that were created by freeware hackers who felt compelled to
answer the needs of civers everywhere who desperately wanted to make changes to Civ 1.
This is a Civ 2 modpack that "plays" Civ 1...nothing more...it's like the Fascist Patch
or the Lunar Modack, ok. Do not email me with technical difficulties because you can't
play your old Civ 1 games on this patch!

*****************************************************************************************

WHAT'S NEW IN THIS RELEASE?

This is an unusual patch, in many respects and I wouldn't really take credit for it
as being the first to come up with this idea. First, it was Dorian Crede in 1998 and
John Miles in 1999 who ventured into the Civ 1 idea (sorry John, Dorian beat you to the
idea!). Secondly, a lot of people (too numerous to mention so if I leave out your
name I am sorry!) including TTG Guy from www.civfanatics.com placed the idea before
me through the forum on the website and through Emails. I take credit for compiling the
graphics and applying the idea only. It took a considerable amount of play testing for
some of the changes that were made. I used a combination of Rules.txt
modifications from the authors mentioned here, simply because it was my
greatest effort to stay consistent with the rules for Civ 1. There were a number of
issues to work out that previous authors simply didn't even address and that is more
than understandable...in fact, I look back and think I was crazy for addressing
half of them. However, when making a patch, it sometimes means that detail is the
only thing that makes the patch different and you have to go with it. By the way, this
is a version 1.0 release, so comments are always encouraged.

IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING:

This has been playtested with v2.42 rules with units implemented, and plays
well. This patch will probably run with other versions and a scenario
has been included for people with Fantastic Worlds so that you may play this
patch by simply unzipping all the files into a scenario directory and then just
select the Civ1 scenario. Basically, it's a just a starter game scenario, so there
would be no other point in my making a scenario. I may release a new
version of the Civ 1 Patch, so feel free to contact me if you think it's time!

Of course all concievable actions can't possibly be covered, so if for
some reason you find a glitch, let me know and I'll attempt to fix it! Also,
if any ideas or comments on this patch come to mind, let me know, my E-mail
address is at the end of this text file. Not all aspects of the game
mechanics could be changed without completely reworking the game code. Some
suggestions you may have may not be possible to implement.

IMPORTANT:

You MUST have AT LEAST version 1.08 of Civ II for this patch to run properly.
Versions later than 1.08 of Civ II will all run without error. If you do not
know what version of Civ II you are running, select the "GAME" column from
the pull down menu and select "Game Options" (or "CTRL O"). This will list
your version of Civ II. If you need to update your version of Civ II, go to
the MicroProse website at http://www.microprose.com or on CompuServe go to
the Game Publishers Forum, keyword "Go Gambpub." Be sure that you take the time
to download the current version of Civ II, so this patch will run correctly.

Do Not use this patch on any saved games, especially from other patches. In the
Civ 1 Patch... units are swapped around, and will do strange things to your
saved games! As far as I know, this isn't the only Civ 1 Patch it is the
only version of it I have authored. If you have some other version at this time,
prior to December 2000, I'm not the AUTHOR! Just start a new game, or wait to
install this patch!

CREDITS:

Some of the graphics in this patch are exclusively my own. This patch was created
almost entirely from scratch which meant I had to draw or manipulate over 21 graphics.
The terrain is entirely new, and the city graphics are new except for the modern
cities.

Special thanks to Dorian Crede who supplied some graphics and rules for innovation.

Special thanks to John Miles whose patch put me on the road to creating
this one by answering some logistical problems through the files.

Special thanks to "TTG Guy" for his support, screen captures, webpage, mentoring,
opinions, graphics, ideas, enthusiasm and suggestions!

Special thanks to Steven Strayer for his ReadThis.txt format.

Special thanks to Microprose, for several units, icons, and such taken from
the Original Civilization 1 by Sid Meier and Bruce Shelly.

I would also like to acknowledge the many artists whose work that
went into graphics that I do not know the names of. I have made every
effort to include everyone, but in the course of making this patch,
it is possible that I have missed someone. So, if by chance you see
anything that even resembles the work of others, please, please email
me so that I may include their name for the proper credit!
