^^A BRIEF OVERVIEW
^
^It is the beginning of June. The rebellion has been in progress for a week, and despite the failure
^of the Mail Coach Signal - the halting of the mail coaches was to be the signal that the rebellion
^had begun - word has spread, and across the country men are taking up arms in a deperate bid
^for freedom. In most cases armed only with scythes and pikes, they planned to take on the most
^powerful empire in the world. Before the end of the year, over 30,000 lives would be lost in the
^conflict.
^
^Despite the ultimate failure of the rebellion, the legacy which both it and Wolfe Tone himself left
^proved to be the Cornerstone for the founding of the Irish Republic. His belief in an Irish
^Republic, freedom of religion and violence to acheive these goals would become the core of
^Nationalist doctrine in Ireland. Until the creation of the Irish Free State, British rule in Ireland
^would be plagued with rebellion and dissent, although the loss of life would never again reach the
^heights of that bloody year of 1798...
^
^"In a case like this success is everything. Success, in the eyes of the vulgar, fixes its merits"
^ - Theobald Wolfe Tone

^Less than two weeks have elapsed and both the counties of Wexford and Waterford lie under
^rebel control. In the South-East, the rebellion is led by Father John Murphy, spurred into action
^despite his beliefs against violence, due to the injustice surrounding him, with British soldiers
^engaged in a campaign of terror. As the days passed, the rebellion gained more and more
^recruits among the suffering populace, who won their first battle at Oulart Hill due to their vast
^numbers. Enniscorthy soon fell afterwards, followed shortly by the town of Wexford itself!
^
^In the North-East, the rebellion is led by Henry Joy McCracken and Henry Monroe, who lead
^an army of 3,000 men on counties Antrim and Down. While they have not acheived the level of
^success acheived in the South, they stand poised to capture several important towns, their forces
^worringly close to Belfast...

^While the rebellion has been raging in Ireland these past few weeks, Ireland's allies on the
^continent have not been inactive. Wolfe Tone manages to persuade the French to send another
^expiditionary force to Ireland to help in the defeat of the British.
^
^On 24 August, a French expedition lands at Killala, Co. Mayo, with a thousand soldiers. It is
^led by General Humbert. Men from all over Connaught arrive to join his army. He stands
^poised to capture Ballina, and from there, an attack on Castlebar is certainly not out of the
^question...
