Contest #1: "Battle of Adowa" Africa
Design Competition Winners

The scenario design competition challenged people to design the best Civ2 scenario possible covering the period leading up to World War I in Africa. The contest was sponsored by the Scenario League in partnership with the Apolyton Civilization Site's Civ2 Area and Allard & Andrew's Site. There were six entries in all.

The official decision is represented by the Scenario League's Africa Design Award this time. The Peoples' Choice Award is represented by the ribbons. A tie for 2nd place means no yellow ribbon will be awarded this time; instead, we gave two red ribbons.

Congratulations to all the winners!

Lion
Menelik II of Ethiopia
by Blackclove

"The British promised Ethiopia that if they aided the British against Egypt, a major port city would be returned to them. Instead, the British gave it over to the Italians, who fought a war of conquest against the Ethiopians, including Negus Yohannes IV and Menilek II. The newly-unified Italy desperately wanted to build an Empire of her own in Africa. Historically, Menilek II defeated Italy and captured substantial territory, more than doubling the size of his empire. It was not until World War I that Ethiopia would be defeated. Can you
duplicate Menilek's success?"

Oryx
Brown Man's Burden
by Carl Fritz

"This scenario is neither history nor fantasy, but historical fantasy. It's for armchair generals who dream of how efficiently they could crush
native resistance in Africa with Zeppelins and Dreadnoughts. It's for incurable romantics who dream of frustrating imperialist aggression
by leading freedom fighters to victory in the face of overwhelming odds. So don't expect any dinosaurs or Lost Kingdoms in Darkest Africa, but don't expect a history lesson either.

[Download Contest Version] - This is Carl's original scenario that won the contest.

[Download Revised Version] - This version features improved graphics and such as is available from Carl's site.

Sable
Colonial Wars
by Jesús Balsinde

"Of all the African nations, only the ancient kingdom of Ethiopia remained completely free from European domination by the end of the 19th century. But in 1885 the Europeans distributed Africa among themselves and Ethiopia was put under the Italian sphere of influence..." An excellent scenario featuring new units, a fun expansionistic bent, and more.

Rhino
Battle of Adowa
by Cam Hills

"Adowa saved Ethiopia from Italian colonisation and raised its status from that of an isolated nation whose institutions, heritage and people
were held in contempt to that of an equal partner in the world community of nations."

Zebra
African Pride
by Coug

"African pride has come to an end. European powers have turned their eyes toward the black continent, greedy to acquire new lands to impress their fellow Europeans. There are however two independent factions. The Ethiopeans and the Boers. The Ethiopeans have to withstand European colonization while the Boers are fighting for their continued freedom. As one of the European nations the goal is to expand as much as possible before the end of this scenario."

Puma
Scramble for Africa
by Nicolas Holzapfel

"My aim for this scenario was to create one that was historically accurate one from an entirely European perspective. The player takes the role of one of the seven European nations who set out to take their share of Africa. The game begins at the beginning of 1885, immediately after the Berlin Conference. This conference speeded up the colonization process which had been well under away from 1880 since the Europeans realised that they would need to back up their territorial claims with real occupation. It ends with the outbreak of World War I in August 1914. World War I devastated Europe and effectively ended the age of European expansion and imperialism."
