King Minos of Crete approaches Heracles and his Laconians with open arms. For a long time, he
stares at them in awe. Then he finally says:
"Heracles, you and your men did a great deed for me. For many years, so many people from my
country, so many heroes and soldiers tried to kill this beast. Everyone died in the attempt. I don't
know how possibly I can reward you."
"We have been promised the help of a great god. We expect it. But who could it be?"
"Poseidon might appear" Minos replies. I will try to ask the gods on the Olympos in your favor.
Meanwhile on the Olympos:
Once again, Ares must follow the call of his great master. "What is it, o father, o king of gods?"
Zeus glances at Ares and then gets up from his throne. "There is something I want to show you,
Ares, god of war."
Hesitating, Ares follows Zeus. The king of gods reveals a bowl, filled with water. He waves his
arm and a harbor appears in the water. And a palace, above it, built with all magnificence of
architecture.
"Do you remember how Athene offered to take your spot when Heracles killed the Scylla?"
Ares shivers. He knows exactly what he can expect now. "Y...Yes..."
"This Heracles," Zeus' voice roars, "Has now killed the Minotaur! I expect that you will go down to
the world of the mortals at ONCE and keep your promise towads them!"

Heracles proudly enters the gates of Cyzicus. And he has all reasons to be so proud. He has just
defeated an army of Cyclopae. As he comes nearer to the town center, he sees Hermes,
messenger of the gods.
"Heracles of Amyclae, I am amazed by your achievements. I see that your people are stuck in the mud
of the streets. Herewith I give you my blessing, that your people will travel faster!"
Heracles cannot find any words to express his gratefulness. Just as he is about to say something,
Hermes continues:
"I know you are seeking for Poseidon, the god of the seas, to join your quest. He is ready to help
you, but he wants to see you in his domain. Take a port larger than this one, and he will meet
you."
"A port? What port?" Heracles shouts, but Hermes does not hear him and before Heracles can end his
question, he is gone.

Horrified, the king of Crete watches the arrival of the Laconians into his harbor. 'I treated them
like friends,' he thinks, 'I wonder how they will treat me. Poseidon is here. What possibly could
they want more?'
Meanwhile, Poseidon steps on the dock where the ships land. "Here I am, Heracles of Amyclae, in
your service!"
"I see," Heracles replies. "Would you do anything for me?"
"I placed myself into your service. There is nothing I wouldn't do for you." Poseidon glances at the
ships, where the men stand on the deck, then he closely examines Heracles. "I serve you all."
This is what Heracles was waiting for. "I remember the words of the oracle. Only a deity such as
Ares or Poseidon can convince Zeus."
"What do you need Zeus for?" Poseidon inquires. "Only he can defeat the Hades." Heracles replies.
"We need to defeat the Hades." "No." Poseidon shakes his head. "You need to find the Golden
Fleece which the demons have stolen. This is the only way to defeat Hades."
Heracles examines the god. "Yes, but where can I find it?" "In the land of the Cimmerians: The end of
the mortal world. But there, you will need Zeus. I am willing to help you."

In deep amaze, Zeus sees Poseidon, Heracles, Philotios and a selected group of the Laconians
approach the steps of the palace on the Olympos. Silently he thinks 'Yes, these men are worthy!'.
Poseidon steps to the throne of the lord of gods, falls on his knees and speaks:
"O father and lord of all divines, of all heroes and mortals! Here I stand after having experienced
what it means to be a friend of these mortals! Behind me you see Heracles and his Laconians, the
greatest heroes that the world has ever seen. I beg you, father and lord, these men had come so
far in their struggle against Hades, and it would be more than just a shame if we should fail now.
But we would do so if you don't help us!"
Long, the chief deity stares at them. He has already made up his mind, but it would not be like him
if he would give in early. Meanwhile, all the deities of the Olympos have entered the throne room.
After a long time, finally the god speaks:
"O Poseidon, god of the seas! O Heracles of Amyclae! O Laconians who have fought so long and
risked their lives to save the world! I have decided to do as you please! But remember! I will help
you only once! You have proved yourself worthy! But there would be so much that you had to do
to gain my full service for you!

Triumphantly, Heracles picks up the golden fleece.
"Here you have it, O Zeus, lord of gods! I, Heracles of Amyclae have returned it from the hands of
Hades to its divine Security!"
Zeus hears this with delight. He throws one of his lightnigs into the dark territory of Epirus where
the gates of Hades are thought to be.
"There you have it, Heracles of Amyclae! Here may the final battle between good and evil be fought!"

Silently, Heracles steps to the smoking hole. Just a minute ago, he'd seen Hades, the god of the
Underworld dissapear here. With disbelief he looks down. Nothing. A deep, gapping hole. Is this it?
^
Ares takes his side.
"What is it, Heracles?"
"Was this it?" The Hero stares into the eyes of the god who fought so bravely at his side.
"Yes." The voice of Ares does not sound triumphant.
^
Silently, the Hero walks back. His spear has broken, his sword is lost, his helmet splattered with
blood... is he really the victor? Victor over evil? Who knows?
^
Heracles boards the ship. He does not hear the cheers of the Laconians, and while these are celebrating,
the hero steps into a small, dark corner and looks back to the high mountains. Dark clouds cover their
peaks. Lightnings strike. The gods are giving the dead Hades the rest. Everybody is happy.
^
So why isn't Heracles?
